Commercial buildings must meet various standards to attain Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. The ADA Standards for Accessible Design have many points you can use to help you reach compliance, and one of these points involves getting wheelchair ramps ready. The REDD Team will help you get there by building wheelchair ramps for commercial buildings that you can install at your site.
You can provide us with your design plans, and we’ll build a new ramp here in the United States and ship it to your site for installation. All our parts are prefabricated, and each shipment includes the necessary parts to help you install your ramp. We also make these ramps out of aluminum, so they’ll be easy to move and install without risking dents, rust, or other frequent problems with other metals.
But while our work is helpful, you might be curious about how your ramp will help you reach ADA compliance. The ramp will make it easier for people to get around different parts of your building. Some ramps can work outside a building to help people enter a spot, while others can work around steps and other barriers.
The ADA has various rules in the Standards for Accessible Design to ensure your ramp works:
- Each ramp should have a running slope of 1:12 or less. A flatter slope is recommended, but a slope that goes twelve inches long for each inch of rise is acceptable.
- Handrails will go on both sides of the ramp if the run is over six inches long.
- Each ramp should be at least 36 inches wide. This width is enough to cover an average wheelchair.
- A minor edge protection feature should appear on the sides. This setup will keep a wheelchair from sliding off the ramp.
- Landings of at least 60 inches in length are necessary on the top and bottom parts of the ramp.
- For cases where the ramp changes direction, a landing of 60 inches on each side is necessary at the spot where the direction shifts.
These standards for wheelchair ramps in commercial buildings should be easy to meet. The REDD Team will prepare new ramps for your business to help you stay compliant.
There are also various reasons why compliance is necessary:
- You can improve how well people get around your building when you maintain compliance with ADA rules.
- When you meet compliance standards, you will also show your due diligence to people. It will be easier for you to get people to trust your business when you work with compliance in mind.
- The penalties for not complying with ADA rules can be substantial. While the odds of you getting the maximum fine of $75,000 for a first offense may be slim, the risk is still significant enough to where you’ll have to work on compliance.
