Modular structures are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. They offer cost-effective ways of quickly building schools, hospitals, and other facilities at affordable rates. There are many modular structures in the U.S., ranging from temporary mining camps to construction sites. The popularity of modular buildings is partly pegged on their scalable and cost-effective nature.

Heavy-Duty Aluminum StairsMany people neglect building accessibility when constructing modular buildings.  At REDD Team, we advise our clients to consider building access right from the beginning of their construction projects. If you are looking for a durable accessibility option, consider incorporating heavy-duty aluminum stairs into the design of your modular building.

Advantages of Aluminum Stairs

As a business owner, you may need to move with time. The biggest drawback with steel and wood accessibility stairs is you may have to remove and dispose of them during a move. In addition, you may have to install new stairs if you need to reuse the building.

Aluminum is a popular structural material in the fabrication of stairways and other access systems. It is lighter than steel and iron, and some aluminum alloys are stronger than some steel alloys. But the extruded aluminum components also have some properties that are unmatched by other materials:

  1. Aluminum has good thermal conductivity. At low temperatures, aluminum alloys get stronger without losing quality, making them excellent for cold weather applications. The metal also conducts heat well and will stay cool to the touch (another safety advantage).
  2. Aluminum reacts with the oxygen in the air to form an extremely thin layer of oxide, creating a resistance to rust and corrosion. It can withstand highly-corrosive environments such as marine settings and locations with bad weather.
  3. Aluminum is lightweight, with a density one third that of steel. This low density does not affect its strength.
  4. Unlike wood, aluminum will never warp, rot or split, does not need to be refinished, and requires no sanding, scraping, painting or staining to maintain.
  5. Complex shapes can be fabricated in one-piece extruded sections, eliminating the need for mechanical joining. Stair frame components are consequently stronger and less likely to loosen over time.
  6. The natural metallic surface of aluminum is attractive on its own, but it can be anodized, painted or powder-coated if desired. It is also a good reflector of both visible light and radiated heat.
  7. Aluminum can be recycled over and over again without losing any of its superb characteristics.
