California is one of the most ADA-compliant states in the nation and has its own unique set of requirements for building accessibility that apply to new construction as well as to existing structures. REDD Team, a nationally known access products brand, has the solutions you need.

REDD Team, a product brand of Hydro Extrusion North America, part of the world’s largest aluminum extrusion company, produces aluminum stair and ramp solutions in standard and custom configurations in the United States at Hydro’s Delhi, Louisiana extrusion facility. They can be designed and manufactured in custom lengths and sizes with adjustable heights for better versatility.

California ADA Requirements for Building AccessibilityThe REDD Team Universal Wheelchair Ramp System provides ADA-compliant wheelchair access to site-built and modular buildings. With its ease of mobility, long life cycle, and modular aluminum components, it can be easily moved to a new location and reconfigured to meet your needs. Along with its counterpart, the REDD Team Universal Stair, this ADA-compliant ramp provides you with safe, low-maintenance wheelchair accessibility solutions.

Our stairs and ramps are fabricated from 6000 series aluminum and alloys 6061-T6, 6063-T5 or 6063-T6 for structural strength and toughness. They are equipped with smooth, continuous handrails and a slip resistant walking surface for safe and easy access.

California ADA Guidelines for Safe Ramps

The California ADA requirements for wheelchair ramps are summarized below, but we recommend that you consult your local building inspector for more ADA code compliance information.

  • Wheelchair ramps must be a minimum of 48 inches wide.
  • Wheelchair ramps exceeding 30 feet must have a resting platform.
  • Wheelchair ramps may not exceed a 1:12 slope ratio, which equals 4.8 degrees slope or one foot of ramp for every inch of rise.
  • Landings at the top of the wheelchair ramp must be at least 5-feet wide in the direction of travel.
  • Landings at the bottom of a wheelchair ramp must extend 6-feet in the direction of travel past the edge of the ramp.
  • A landing at a change in direction must be at least 6-feet x 5-feet in the direction of downward travel from the upper ramp rum.
  • All ADA wheelchair ramp landings with manual swinging gates or doors must adhere to the maneuvering clearance regulations specified in the California Building Code.
  • Handrails that are between 34 inches and 38 inches in height are required on both sides of all ramps that rise steeper than 6 inches or have a horizontal projection of more than 72 inches.
  • ADA ramps must have edge protection to prevent accidental slipping.
  • The surfaces of ADA ramps and platforms must be slip-resistant and designed to prevent accumulation of water.

REDD Team ramps and stairs are also compliant with the regulations of California’s Division of the State Architect (DSA), that govern the construction of buildings in California and promote accessibility.
