Start With the Steps

A width of at least 22 inches and a depth of 9.5 inches or greater are necessary. The risers can be around 9.5 inches each, but avoid making them too high.
Sizing the Platform
Next, we have the platform. The platform at the top must be sized so people can safely get on top of the surface. The platform must first be at least 30 inches deep, although most people tend to get platforms much deeper for observational or access purposes.

The platform also has to be built so items won’t slide off the surface. Small risers should appear on the ends of the platform to keep large items from moving off and getting in the way of someone underneath the surface. This safety feature is necessary to keep everyone protected while near the platform.
Handrails Are Necessary
The third part of your steps to check is the handrails you’ll use. Your aluminum steps with a platform will require a handrail around the entire body. In addition to rails on the sides of the steps, you’ll also need rails on the platform if it is at least four feet higher than the lower level it goes over.
While the handrails next to the steps should be 36 inches high, the rails on the platform must be slightly taller, at about 42 inches. A 3-inch tolerance is acceptable, although staying as close as possible to the 42-inch standard is ideal. The rails must also handle at least 200 pounds of force from all directions within two inches of the top edge.
