OSHA Requirements

OSHA mandates for workplace stairs are extremely specific – especially as they pertain to industrial settings. Here are just a few of the guidelines fixed stairways must meet in industrial environments.

  • If stairs have four risers or more, they have to include handrails or railings. The rails must be able to withstand at least 200 pounds of force, regardless of the direction from which that force is applied.
  • The rise of the stairs must be between 6.5 and 9.5 inches. The amount of rise needed will depend on the angle of the stairs. If, for instance, your stairs will run at an angle of 40 degrees, they must include 8 inches of rise.
  • If you are installing fixed stairs, they must be at least 22 inches wide. They also must be strong enough to withstand a load five times that of a typical load. They have to be able to carry a load of at least 1,000 pounds.
  • The height of the rise, as well as the tread, must be uniform.
  • Stair railings must be included on all open sides of stair platforms as well as exposed stairways.
  • The stairway platform has to be no less than 30 inches long in relation to the direction of travel. In addition, the platform ahs to be as wide as the stairway.
  • There are only limited situations where a spiral stairway will be permitted. If a conventional stairway will not be practical in a particular application, then spiral steps may be used.
  • The leading edge of the stairs must be no less than 7 feet from any sort of overhead obstruction.

The experts with REDD Team are extremely familiar with all OSHA requirements governing stairs and other accessibility system components. Not only are our products OSHA compliant, they also comply with several other codes as well. These include the ADA, IBC and many others.
