Meeting All ADA Requirements

The ADA has been around since Congress made it a law in 1991. Since then, countless Americans have found it much easier to get into public buildings. These include schools, clinics, retail stores, churches and many others. In fact, you’ll find our products used in these and several other applications.

It will be critically important that you have an idea of what the ADA requires – just in the area of wheelchair ramps. Here’s just a brief look at some of those requirements.

  • Ramps have to be at least 36 inches wide. However some states require ramps be at least 48 inches in width.
  • Ramps cannot have a slope ratio of greater than 1:12. This simply means that for every 1 inch of height, the slope needs to be 12 inches. If a ramp is to be 30 inches high, then it needs to be 30 feet long.
  • The top and bottom of the ramp has to have a minimum 5-foot by 5-foot unobstructed area.
  • If the ramp is to be more than 30 feet long, it must include an intermediate platform.
  • Handrails must also be installed on both sides of ramps with more than a 6-inch rise, or a horizontal projection of 72 inches or more. They can be no shorter than 34 inches, and no taller than 38 inches.
  • The edges of the ramps have to be protected against slipping. The surfaces must be slip-resistant as well, and be able to prevent water from accumulating during heavy rains.

REDD Team ramps check all of these boxes and many others. We have a deep understanding of the ADA, and we can put that knowledge to work for you. We will help ensure that your facility is in total compliance so that you won’t have to worry about committing any potentially serious ADA violations.
