How Are the Steps Designed?
The steps on your stairs should be sized so people can quickly go up and down. The general rules to consider for your steps are as follows:
- The riser should be anywhere from four to seven inches high.
- The tread should be about nine to twelve inches deep. The tread should be deep enough to where an average foot can get on and off of it without struggle.
- The width can be about 22 inches if one person will use the steps at a time. However, the steps can be 36 inches or greater if multiple people use them simultaneously.
- The angle of the steps can be from 30 to 50 degrees. They can’t be too steep, though, so people might struggle to go up them or go too fast down them.
- All these features are designed with handrails with top parts about 34 to 38 inches above the walking surface. These rails are necessary to provide a guard for people going up and down the steps.
The steps should also be designed with enough openings to keep water from accumulating, especially if they are outdoors. The REDD Team can plan the proper size for your steps while establishing the correct number of openings to create a safe space for going up and down.
What About Multiple Floors?
