Safety First

ADA Access To Government And Public BuildingsREDD Team uses high quality aluminum in all of the wheelchair ramps, stairs and other accessibility components we offer. This incredible material is not only as strong as steel, but it’s also quite a bit lighter. This will save you money and will also make installation very fast and very easy. The reason is that, unlike steel, aluminum doesn’t require any spot-welding.

When it comes to making sure you’re compliant with ADA requirements, however, safety is paramount. Our products are built for people with restricted mobility. Even if your facility has hard-to-reach and elevated areas, our ramps, stairs and other products will always provide plenty of traction – even during heavy rain.

Our Universal Stair, Universal Wheelchair Ramp and other products meet or exceed the most demanding industry codes. These include the following.

  • BOCA
  • UBC
  • IBC
  • SBC

  • SREF

ADA-Compliant Ramps

When Congress passed the ADA in 1991, it did so to ensure that people with physical limitations could access governmental and public facilities. The ADA is very specific when it comes to wheelchair ramps – if they are not compliant, that can lead to extremely harsh financial penalties.

This is just a brief look at some of the ADA requirements as they pertain to wheelchair ramps. If you have any questions, you should contact your city’s building inspector.

  • If your ramp is longer than 30 feet, it has to include an intermediate platform.
  • Ramps that project more than 72 inches, or ramps that have a rise of 6 inches or more, must include handrails between 34-38 inches high.
  • Ramps must be protected along the edges to reduce the risk of slipping.
  • Both the top and bottom of the ramp must include an unobstructed area of at least 5 feet by 5 feet.
  • Every inch a ramp rises must have a corresponding foot of ramp. If your ramp will have a 25-foot rise, for instance, it must be 30 feet long.
  • In most states, ramps must be at least 36 inches in width. Some states have width requirements of 48 inches or more. Talk to a REDD Team expert and we’ll know the requirements in your state.
  • Ramps must be made of material that prevents pooling of water and are also slip-resistant. Our aluminum ramps check both boxes.

These just scratch the surface of the many ADA requirements that govern ramps. We are extremely familiar with all ADA mandates, and we’ll be happy to let you know exactly what you need in order to be compliant.
