  • Aluminum won’t corrode like steel or warp like wood. Unless you treat these other materials on a regular basis, they will ultimately fail. Aluminum doesn’t pose that risk – it will maintain its strength and shape over the long haul, no matter what the weather conditions may be.
  • Steel and wood can also become very slippery when they become wet. Aluminum, on the other hand, will remain slip-resistant at all times because it does such an excellent job of draining water.
  • Concrete is obviously durable, but can be very expensive. If your accessibility needs ever change, you’ll have to demolish a concrete ramp and build a completely new one. That won’t be the case with aluminum.

How to Choose the Proper Ramp Length

It might seem that determining the right length for your ramp would be extremely complicated. While it’s important to do so, of course, it’s not as difficult as you may think. Here’s a quick, three-step process to do it.

  • Step 1 – Measure the amount of vertical rise your ramp will need to overcome.
  • Step 2 – Measure the amount of available distance, making sure to measure from the highest access point.
  • Step 3 – Determine the amount of usable width you have to place a ramp.

It will be very important to get your measurements as exact as possible. The reason is that if the ramp is too short, the grade will be too steep. That will not only make it much more difficult for someone to access your building, it could also create a safety hazard. On the other hand, if the ramp is too long it might not work well for your available space.
