Maintaining OSHA Compliance

OSHA has strict requirements for ramps that must be followed in order for your company to avoid substantial fines and other penalties. Here are just a few of them.

  • If you are constructing a building, all ramps have to be well lighted until construction is complete.
  • Ramps must be available during any sort of excavation that involves holes that are 4 feet or deeper. These ramps must stay in place until excavation is complete. They must also contain slip-resistant materials and run from the top of the excavation site to the bottom.
  • While ramps can be made of metal, wood or earthen materials, they must only be installed by someone who is qualified in the area of structural design.
  • If you have a ramp made of more than one piece, each piece has to connect with the others. They must also be of identical thickness so that displacement doesn’t occur.
  • Ramps, as well as walkways, will typically need to include guardrails if they are more than 5 feet above the ground.
  • Your ramp can’t have an incline of a ratio of more than one vertical unit to three horizontal units.
  • Ramps with a slope of more than a 1:8 vertical to horizontal ratio has to be outfitted with cleats. These cleats must be securely fastened to planks, and cannot be spaced more than 14 inches apart. This is to ensure footing always remains secure.
  • Certain types of work environments have specific ramp requirements. Longshore operations, for example, fall under this category. They have to adhere to rules that apply to not only ramps, but also gangways and bridge plates. A REDD Team representative can help if you have any questions.

Safety is Always Priority One

Workplace ramps typically see a lot of use from heavy equipment, such as forklifts. Here are just a few safety tips for your forklift operators to keep in mind if they’ll be using your ramps in this fashion.

  • Never look anywhere else but the direction in which you’re traveling.
  • Never try to make a turn on a ramp. Always make sure the forks are pointing in the right direction before getting on the ramp.
  • Always make sure you stay a safe distance from the ramp’s edges.
  • Loads should always point up an incline, no matter what the direction of travel may be.
  • If a forklift is empty and going across a ramp, the forks should always point downgrade no matter the direction of travel.
