Anyone, regardless of age, is at risk of serious injury when using stairs. In fact, according to OSHA, at least 15% of all workplace deaths are caused by slips and falls, including those that occur on stairs. Portable aluminum stairs are one of the safest, most cost-effective ways to prevent injuries.
REDD Team by Sapa has been producing high-quality metal stairs and work platforms for decades. We manufacture some of the finest American-made industrial stairways and work platforms on the market today. Our products are highly valued for the construction, modular building, oil-shale drilling and military industries, as well as aerospace and many other applications.
Our expertise includes working with 6000 series aluminum alloy and 6061-T6 for primary structural components. This alloy conducts and dissipates heat well. And, since it can be extruded, it can be formed into almost any imaginable shape, making it ideal for the fabrication of stairs, ramps, and walkways.
Why Aluminum Is a Smart Choice
The biggest difference between steel and aluminum is obviously weight. Steel is typically 2.5 times denser/heavier than aluminum. This means that aluminum access structures will be easier to handle and less expensive to ship. Other significant differences include:
Resists Rust and Corrosion. One of aluminum’s greatest characteristics is that it is naturally corrosion resistant without the need for additional treatment. It doesn’t rust. This is due to the presence of a thin, naturally occurring protective film of aluminum oxide that bonds to its surface. Steel usually needs to be painted to protect it from rust and corrosion, especially if it will be used in a moist or damp environment. So, structurally, aluminum fares much better than steel when exposed to the elements and tends to last even longer when exposed to wet conditions.
UV Resistant & Fireproof. Aluminum is a very good conductor of heat, so it absorbs heat very quickly. This means that your aluminum stairs, walkways and platforms will stay cool to the touch, even on very hot days, making aluminum one of the safest materials for outdoor use. Also, due to its metallic properties, aluminum is non-combustible and will not emit any toxic fumes when exposed to high temperatures.
Maintenance Free. Wood and composite materials react to changing weather conditions by absorbing water, cracking, rotting, warping or breaking. In contrast, aluminum has incredible strength and durability. Aluminum does not absorb water and will not rust, rot or crack. It is not susceptible to termites. While stairs and other access systems made of wood or steel require regular scraping, sanding, painting and sealing, aluminum maintains its natural appearance for a lifetime.
Sustainable. Aluminum is an environmentally responsible and sustainable metal. Its metallic properties allow it to be recycled efficiently and incorporated into safety access products with minimal environmental effects. It can be recycled using only 5% of the energy needed to produce new aluminum. And aluminum can be recycled again and again without suffering from any degradation.
